Composing a Thank You Note

Let’s all be honest and acknowledge that writing Thank You notes is usually a low priority in our fast paced lives of work, dinner and family.  However, receiving a handwritten note in the mail adds a bit of personal connection to the day.

Yes, it is easier to jot off an email but anyone can do that.  A handwritten note in itself is thoughtful and gracious.  A note doesn’t have to be long or even planned.

Emily Post, the queen of etiquette, recommends that a note for all gifts and a handwritten note over an email or phone call.  We personally agree that a handwritten thank you note is more thoughtful than an email.

Here are our tips for composing thank you notes:

1. Think of it as relax time! Grab a glass of wine, a stack of note cards (Coyne and Pinckney distinctive designs make it fun and thoughtful) and a pen.

2. Think of the person/people who gave the gift and address them personally.   It is a bit more difficult to relate to a gift giver you may not know personally or a gift that was odd but just think of the time they took and address that!

3.  Mention the gift or gesture, specifically.  You may never use Aunt Janice’s neon yellow vases but she would appreciate a thanks for the gift.

4.  It is always nice to recall the time when you saw the gift giver (It was lovely to see you at Sarah’s home for the bridal shower).

5.  Just remember, you are going to make someone’s day with a simple, handwritten gesture – no matter what you say!
